1990 Franklins adopts barcode scanners

The discount grocery chain Franklins was the first of the major grocery chains to use barcode scanners at all checkouts. The technology had been around for some time. In 1979, SIMS supermarket in the Melbourne suburb of Footscray had been the first supermarket in Australia to use barcode scanning and Coles began trialling the system in 1982. However, it took more than a decade from their introduction to Australian food retailing for barcodes to become standard practice.
