1990 Franklins adopts barcode scanners

SIMS supermarket in the Melbourne suburb of Footscray was the first supermarket in Australia to use barcode scanning and Coles trialled the system in 1982. However, it took some time for barcodes to become standard practice. The discount grocery chain Franklins was the first of the major grocery chains to use  barcode scanners at all checkouts.
